Understand everything about Futures Trading on OKX

Trading Futures on OKX is a powerful financial tool that differs significantly from Spot trading. Understanding these mechanics is essential for managing your risk effectively.

Spot vs. Futures: The Core Difference
Spot Trading: You are buying the actual asset (e.g., buying 1 Bitcoin). You own it, and you can hold it indefinitely in your wallet regardless of price fluctuations. You only lose money if the price drops to zero or if you choose to sell at a loss.

Futures Trading: You are not buying the asset itself; you are buying a contract that represents the value of the asset. You are speculating on whether the price will go up (Long) or down (Short) in the future. You do not own the underlying Bitcoin.

Understanding Leverage: The Multiplier
Leverage allows you to open a position much larger than your actual capital. If you use x10 leverage, you are essentially controlling a position worth 10 times your collateral (margin).

Example: You have $1,000 in your Futures wallet. With x10 leverage, you can open a position worth $10,000.

The Impact: If the price of Bitcoin increases by 5%, your $10,000 position gains $500 (5%). Since you only used $1,000 of your own money, that $500 profit represents a 50% return on your collateral. Conversely, if the price drops by 5%, you lose 50% of your collateral.

How Liquidation Works
Liquidation is the process where the exchange automatically closes your position to prevent your account balance from becoming negative. This happens when the market moves against your position to the point where your collateral is exhausted.

Example (Long Position): You open a Bitcoin Long position at $60,000 with x10 leverage using $1,000.

Without leverage, the price would need to drop to $0 to lose your investment.

With x10 leverage, your “Liquidation Price” is much closer. If the price drops by approximately 10% (roughly to $54,000), your $1,000 collateral is wiped out. Bitget will liquidate your position to cover the loss, and your balance will hit $0.

Managing Risk
Volatility: Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are highly volatile. High leverage magnifies this volatility, making liquidation a very real risk even in short timeframes.

Stop-Loss: Always use a Stop-Loss order to automatically exit your trade if the market moves against you before it reaches the liquidation price.

Education: Never invest money you cannot afford to lose. Start with small positions to understand how leverage, margin, and liquidation work in practice before scaling up.

Trading Futures is a high-risk, high-reward environment. While it offers the ability to profit from market declines and amplify gains, it requires discipline, constant monitoring, and a solid understanding of how leverage impacts your capital
